As we honor Native American Heritage Month this November, we are proud to share the story of Dominique, a member of the Native American community, who has made remarkable strides with the support of Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona (Tucson).
Dominique’s journey with Goodwill® began through the Tucson Adult Probation Offices. Encouraged by his probation officer, Dominique enrolled in the Ignite 2.0 program, seeking to learn a trade skill and set his life on a new path. His commitment to self-improvement and determination to succeed quickly became evident.
Earning His GED
The Ignite 2.0 team connected Dominique to an in-person GED program, which he attends weekly. The team also provided regular counseling to help him maintain positive momentum in both his education and employment during uncertain times. Additionally, the program supplied Dominique with essential work attire, including clothes and non-slip shoes, ensuring he was properly equipped for his job at Jack in the Box.
Since joining the program, Dominique has achieved significant milestones. He passed his first GED test in Civics and is on track to earn his full GED by December 2024.
Advancing His Career
His dedication to work has not gone unnoticed; Dominique has maintained his position at Jack in the Box, where store leadership is considering him for a promotion to Team Lead. His ambition doesn’t stop there — Dominique is also planning to take on a second job at Dunkin’ Donuts to achieve his short-term goals of securing his own apartment and paying off his restitutions.
Dominique is also currently working towards his ServSafe Certification, which he believes will enhance his qualifications and demonstrate his readiness for a leadership role at Jack in the Box. Reflecting on his progress, Dominique shared one of his favorite quotes, “Anything is possible when you’re willing to put the hard work in.”
Dominique’s story is a testament to the transformative power of support and determination. With his hard work and some help of Goodwill, he is not only earning his GED and maintaining employment but also planning for a brighter future. His journey serves as a reminder that with perseverance and the right support, we can overcome any obstacle.
