Tacoma Goodwill Holds Successful Teacher Book Giveaway

On Saturday, August 25, Goodwill Olympics & Rainier Region (Tacoma) gave approximately 850 teachers and educators 50,000 free books at four local Goodwill® retail stores in order to address the need for age appropriate books in elementary and middle schools in southwest Washington.

Participants Thrive in SCSEP at Evansville Goodwill

This is the second year the U.S. Department of Labor has awarded Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) grant money to Evansville Goodwill Industries, Inc. (IN). Evansville Goodwill is one of six Goodwill® organizations participating in SCSEP. SCSEP is funded through the Older Americans Act. The program trains low-income seniors who are unemployed.

High School Focuses on Goodwill Services, Increases Graduation Rate

Goodwill’s Indianapolis Metropolitan High School, a best-fit charter school for teens experiencing circumstances that may become barriers to education, recently celebrated its graduating class of 2018. The graduation rate for the school is up 45% over last year.

Goodwill Western Missouri & Eastern Kansas Launches Program to Support Individuals with Criminal Backgrounds

Goodwill Western Missouri & Eastern Kansas (Kansas City) conducted a community assessment in the spring and fall of 2016 and found that more than 19,000 individuals were rejoining their local community after some time of incarceration. Following the workforce survey, the local Goodwill® launched the GoodPATH initiative to help individuals with criminal backgrounds re-enter the workforce by working in Goodwill retail stores. The St. Joseph Goodwill store will pilot the new program by providing jobs in store production, the donation bay area and at the register assisting customers. They will also provide job training and job placement services.

Transforming Lives for Disruptive Times

For many years, Goodwill® organizations have been providing programs and opportunities for older workers. In 2016, Goodwills across the country touched 60,000 lives through the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), and they have affected nearly 50,000 lives so far for the 2017 program year, which ends July 2018. SCSEP is a community service job-training program focused on serving older Americans and older job seekers who have low incomes, are unemployed and need training in order to return to the workforce.
