Roanoke Goodwill Featured in National Publication for Workforce Development

The Aspen Institute’s Workforce Strategies Initiatives (AspenWSI) and Achieving the Dream recently released a new case study, titled“Working Together, Making a Difference”, which highlights the partnership between Goodwill Industries of the Valleys (Roanoke) and Virginia Western Community College. The partnership is part of the Courses to Employment project.

Veterans Honored with Mural in San Antonio

Earlier this month, Goodwill San Antonio (TX) and it’s community partner Starbucks celebrated Veterans Day by unveiling a mural by acclaimed artist Jesse Treviño, a veteran who painted the mural to honor the men and women who have served in the United States military.

Local Church Donates Turkeys to Sarasota Goodwill's Veterans Program

Last week, Goodwill Ambassadors – community members who volunteer and support Goodwill Manasota’s (Sarasota) work throughout the area – from the First United Methodist Church of Sarasota donated 30 turkeys and Thanksgiving baskets to the organization's Veterans Services Program. These items were provided so that area veterans could enjoy a delicious holiday meal with their families.

Goodwill® Affiliate in Uruguay Celebrates 90-Year Anniversary

The Instituto de Buena Voluntad, Goodwill’s affiliate organization in Uruguay, celebrated 90 years of history on Friday, November 13. The organization located in Montevideo, Uruguay, was founded in 1925 by Methodist pastor Earl Smith. Early Buena Voluntad leader Antonio Loureiro, was sent to Boston to learn the Goodwill model directly from the source while he prepared to return home and assist the new organization. After spending a year in training in Boston, he returned to Uruguay to help lead the new program.

Youth Receive Long-Term Job Training in Charlotte, NC

Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont’s (Charlotte, NC) Career Leadership Academy for Youth (CLAY) was recently profiled in the Charlotte Observer. The goal of CLAY is to prepare area youth for jobs in today’s market. Eligible participants include high school and college students ages 14-21 who face academic or financial challenges, are pregnant or parents, first-generation high school or college graduates, have legal involvement or are without parents in the home due to incarceration or death.

Winston-Salem Goodwill Hosts Women’s Vets Employment Symposium

On October 22, Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina (Winston-Salem) held the Women’s Employment and Empowerment Symposium to serve female veterans, service members and others in the community. The first-ever event welcomed about 30 participants.

Comedian Amy Schumer Joins LA Goodwill for Women’s Workshop

Last week, recent Emmy winner and “Trainwreck” star Amy Schumer collaborated with Goodwill Southern California (Los Angeles) to empower women through fashion. In conjunction with the comedian’s Style Fund, LA Goodwill job seekers were offered the opportunity to attend the Style Empowerment Workshop. Thirty participants enjoyed a morning of celebration and transformation with fashion stylists, and hair and make-up professionals. Each guest took home a complimentary professionally styled outfit and accessories and a new found confidence – to help them tackle the working world and create a brighter pathway to success for themselves and their families.

Boston Goodwill Showcases Historic Wall Hanging

Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries (Boston, MA) recently hung a commemorative wall hanging in the agency’s headquarters, originally created to celebrate Goodwill Industries of America's (now known as Goodwill Industries International) 75th anniversary in 1977. The piece, which resembles a quilt, illustrates the Boston Goodwill’s history and provides a look at the composition of the Goodwill enterprise at the time.

Goodwill® GoodGuides Program Keeps Youth on Path to Graduation

Recent data shows high school graduation rates across the U.S. are at an all-time high, surpassing 81 percent. Studies also indicate that a young person’s success can be greatly enhanced by a champion or mentor, an adult who consistently helps in ways both big and small. Goodwill’s GoodGuides program is among several mentoring success stories that were featured on PBS’s “American Graduate Day” broadcast on October 3.

Columbus, GA Goodwill Connects Hispanics with Key Resources

Any one of Goodwill Industries of Southern Rivers (Columbus, GA/GoodwillSR) nine career centers is often filled with clients who are on a mission – a mission to find employment and increase economic stability. Increasingly, Hispanics who live in GoodwillSR’s 50-county territory are included in that mission. Recognizing the need to connect Latinos in east Alabama and west Georgia to local resources, the Goodwill's Hispanic Services has kicked off a robust initiative, in partnership with the Goizueta Foundation, to attract and serve this growing demographic.

Community College Offers Construction Training Opportunities Through Richmond Goodwill

Thomas Nelson Community College recently announced the opening of the Thomas Nelson Center for Building and Construction Trades at the Goodwill Retail Operations Center in Hampton, VA. Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia (Richmond) partnered with the school to deliver workforce training that leads to employment in well-paying jobs for a portion of the Peninsula’s population that has historically been underemployed. Individuals in this population often lack a high school diploma or GED, literacy skills, work experience, security clearance, or access to educational funding.
