South Bend, IN Goodwill Hosts Collaborative Drive for Veterans

After serving our country and returning home, some veterans find themselves homeless. Many receive help from local programs to get them back on their feet. But, as they transition into their own homes, they often don’t have a bed to sleep in or table and chairs. Goodwill Industries of Michiana (South Bend) committed to resolving this issue by hosting a donation drive in partnership with the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association. The D-Day Donation Drive, called “Operation 4D” was the first partnership of its kind for the agency.

#GoodwillDate Begins to Go Viral

A young Florida couple is being credited for creating what might be the next big date night trend: “Goodwill Date.” The idea was initially conceived when Cody Andrews and his girlfriend Paula Williams, were donating items and shopping at their local Goodwill store in Fort Walton Beach, FL. The duo selected a quirky outfit for each other and then went on a date without informing others of their plan.

Sarasota Goodwill Keeps Alive the Spirit of ’45 with Events Honoring Veterans

On August 15, women dressed as Rosie the Riveter welcomed 248 veterans and their families to a 1940s-themed party hosted by Goodwill Manasota (Sarasota, FL) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Veterans from all military branches, wars and conflicts attended, dancing the night away to the sounds of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and the Andrew Sisters.

Obion County, TN: A Case Study in Goodwill’s Community Impact

When the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. factory in Obion County, TN, shut down in 2011, the local unemployment rate soared past 18 percent. Many of the 1,800 laid off workers struggled with even the first step toward finding a new job. Numerous displaced workers received assistance with their resumes at the Goodwill Career Solutions Center in Union City, the county seat.

Iowa City Goodwill Honors Cornell College with Painting of Alumnus Edgar J. Helms

Goodwill of the Heartland (Iowa City) is presenting Cornell College with a portrait of Goodwill Industries® founder and Cornell College alumnus Edgar J. Helms on August 29, as part of the agency’s 50th anniversary celebration. Helms, who graduated from Cornell College in 1889 with a degree in philosophy, went on to found what would become Goodwill Industries International in Boston in 1902. Helms, a Methodist minister, and his congregation collected used goods and clothing and gave people jobs repairing the items, which were then distributed to those in need.

Macon Goodwill Recognized by GA Department of Corrections

Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the CSRA (Macon) recently was honored as the only non-law enforcement agency named by the Georgia Department of Corrections as a partner agency of the year. The GDC recently announced the awards during the 11th Annual GDC Awards ceremony at Tift College in Forsyth, GA.

Between June 16-19, Goodwill Northern Michigan (Traverse City) and its Mi Fresh Start food truck kicked off summer with the “Celebrity Chef Week” cook off. The winner earned the title of “Good Chef – Chief in Charge of GOOD.”

Inaugural Class Graduates from The Goodwill Excel Center in Austin

On June 26, forty-three students received their high school diploma in the company of hundreds of joy-filled, enthusiastic supporters. Texas Commissioner of Education, Michael Williams, was the Keynote Speaker for the ceremony. “You are courageous. You’ve expressed it and demonstrated it by being here today,” Commissioner Williams said to the students. “Take that courage to go even further.”

Goodwill Niagara Wins the Green Nonprofit Awards

Goodwill Niagara (St. Catherines, ON) was recently awarded a Green Nonprofit Award at the Niagara Regional Environmental Awards. St. Catharines City Councillor Sal Sorrento and Regional Chair Alan Caslin presented the award to the Goodwill’s Board Chair Stan Pride. The Goodwill was recognized for furthering recycling efforts in Niagara by selling, exchanging and distributing recycle boxes, green bins and kitchen catchers. The agency’s partnership with the Niagara Region is a vital one that helps create awareness for the need to recycle as much as possible on a daily basis. These resources are available at the Goodwill’s stores in St. Catharines.
