Goodwill Industries of Arkansas (Little Rock) is offering Arkansans who qualify the opportunity to enroll in free or low-cost health insurance plans at select area Goodwill retail stores. The collaboration with Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield began on November 11 with Blue Cross and Blue Shield staff visiting 12 Little Rock Goodwill locations on specific days of the week

Every Dress Has a Story in Local Goodwill®, Girl Scouts Partnership

On October 28, Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids (MI) and Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore launched Every Dress Has a Story!, a fashion-forward dress drive. The two organizations have partnered to collect gently used dresses from the community to assist the Grand Rapids Goodwill in its mission of providing job training and placement services to area residents. While donors can bring a dress to any Grand Rapids area Goodwill store, members of the community can also host donation bins at their places of business or community centers. Bins can be delivered and picked up by the agency’s staff.

In PA, Goodwill Hosts Art Exhibit Featuring Recovering Artists

Paint brushes with paint on themOn October 24, Goodwill Industries of the Conemaugh Valley (Johnstown, PA) joined forces with the Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center to host The Art of Recovery, an art exhibit celebrating the journey to mental health and wellness. More than 80 guests attended the event, including practitioners, family members, participants and community members.

Goodwill® Ranked among Top Places to Work in Iowa

Goodwill of the Heartland (Iowa City) has been recognized as one of the Top 100 Workplaces for 2013 by the Des Moines Register. The agency was honored at a ceremony last month. The rankings are based solely on employee opinions from an anonymous survey of around 80,000 respondents conducted by WorkplaceDynamics. The survey of companies across Iowa asked employees to share their satisfaction with their workplace, including what is most important to them and how their employers rate on these priorities.

The event aimed to meet the basic needs of attendees by providing a variety of free services including meals, clothing, haircuts and makeovers, health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits counseling, and referrals to other services such as housing and employment for veterans and their families.

Tech Students Create Wellness App for Goodwill® in Columbus, OH

This past weekend students from Ohio State University burned the midnight oil in an effort to encourage Goodwill Columbus (OH) employees to adapt healthy behavior through a mobile app. The development of the app occurred during a 24-hour “Code for Good” challenge sponsored by JPMorgan Chase and Co. “Code for Good” tasks students majoring in computer science, engineering and other related programs to create computer software solutions to the issues of social-service organizations. A total of about 70 students from 11 different colleges participated in the most recent event.

Helms College Celebrates First Graduating Class

The Helms College Augusta Campus recently celebrated its first graduating class. Participants completed a culinary education program at the college, which is operated by Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the CSRA (Augusta/Macon). A total of 10 students took part in an informal ceremony to recognize their accomplishments on September 19.

In OH, Goodwill® Recycling Partnership Diverts 400,000 Pounds of Waste from Landfills

As part of a recycling partnership between Zanesville Welfare Organization and Goodwill Industries (OH) and CertainTeed’s Moundsville, WV, gypsum manufacturing facility, employees at the plant diverted more than 400,000 pounds of waste from landfills since last year. While recycling began shortly after the plant opened in 2008, the collaboration began in 2011.

OK Goodwill Wins $1.4 Million to Provide Support Services to Veterans

Goodwill Industries of Central Oklahoma (Oklahoma City) received a $1.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide supportive services to veteran families with very low incomes. Under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, the Goodwill will join forces with six other organizations that serve veterans to provide services designed to promote stability.
