Two Orlando teenagers recently achieved a goal they never thought possible. Pablo Rodriguez and Brandon Scoggins, both 18, graduated from high school, thanks to Project COMPASS, a partnership between Goodwill Industries of Central Florida (Orlando) and Orange County Public Schools.

According to the World Health Organization, 13 million deaths annually and nearly a quarter of all diseases worldwide are due to environmental causes that could be avoided or prevented. One of the most effective ways to protect the planet is by donating and repurposing items instead of throwing them away and creating waste. Last year alone, local Goodwill organizations kept nearly 4 billion pounds of items out of landfills through the sale of donated goods and sustainability programs.
Two years ago, Jonathan Tingley, moved back home. But unlike some “boomeranging” millennials, Jonathan needs constant care because he has disabilities including autism. His mother, Nancy Moore, didn’t want him sitting at home watching TV all day; she has dreams for her son to become more independent. That’s when she connected with LifeWorks, Goodwill®’s program for adults with disabilities.

It was a full day of activities in Goodwill Industries of Tulsa’s Transition Work Adjustment Training classroom. Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder from surrounding public high schools go for half of their school day to prepare for entering the workforce upon graduation.

According to recent study at Cornell University, nearly 150,000 people living in Arkansas are deaf or have a hearing-related disability. According to the National Deaf Center, 60 percent of individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deaf-blind are unemployed, in comparison to the 4 percent national average. Goodwill Industries of Arkansas (Little Rock) has launched a program to combat this disparity.
The Excel Center is a free Indiana charter high school diploma program with campuses in South Bend, Hammond and Gary. They offer high school classes to achieve a Core 40 diploma. They are a school designed to help adult students excel!
