In WV, Goodwill®-Community College Partnership Helps Participants Build Skills, Advance Education

Goodwill Industries of KYOWVA Area and Mountwest Community and Technical College's partnership dates back to 2005, when an instructor was teaching a part-time computer class at MCTC and at Goodwill. She realized that the Goodwill participants were doing the same amount and caliber of work as the MCTC students, and believed they should earn the same college credit hours. As the organizations shared their expertise, an original one-course partnership grew to three tracks that now allow students to accumulate 12 credit hours or more at Goodwill.

Atlanta Goodwill Co-Hosts Inaugural Summit for Veterans, Service and Leaders

Goodwill of North Georgia (Atlanta) recently held its first Veterans, Service and Leaders Summit, a half-day knowledge-sharing and information-gathering session for about 60 individuals, including representatives from veteran-serving organizations, Georgia elected officials and local veterans. The event aimed to strengthen and increase understanding of the resources that are currently available to veterans and their families, and surface areas where needs are still unmet through the newly created Veteran Leader Corps (VLC).

LA Goodwill Sets World Record with More Than 13 Tons of Donations

Goodwill Southern California (Los Angeles) and partners NBC4 and Universal Studios Hollywood set a new world record for the most usable goods donations received in a 24-hour period. The donation drive, which was a promoted as a celebration of Earth Day 2012, recently received confirmation that the 27,290 pounds of items it collected set a Guinness World Record.

Central Michigan Pilot Program Gives Job Seekers an EDGE in Sector Employment

Even with support from agencies like Goodwill®, pathways out of poverty for the unemployed aren’t always clear. A new partnership between Goodwill Industries of Central Michigan’s Heartland (Battle Creek) and key community organizations is helping individuals living at 200 percent below the poverty level connect with education, work experience and certification in order to gain guaranteed employment.

Goodwill®, Salvation Army Join Forces to Jump Start Careers in Augusta, GA

When deciding to open its first satellite office in the Augusta area, Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the CSRA’s Job Connectionsm chose the Salvation Army’s Kroc Center to work closely with other community resources and to help serve new clients. The Kroc Center’s First Stop Family Service Center is a facility where people in need can receive assistance through a partnership of social service organizations such as Goodwill Industries.

Goodwill® Scholarships Support IL Students Facing Challenges to Education

Earlier this summer, Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois (Rockford) ­­awarded $15,000 for two scholarships to assist persons at Rock Valley College who face challenges to advancing their education. The scholarships — designed to enable the recipients to build a better future for themselves, their families and the entire community — were made possible by funds raised from the Goodwill’s Diva Dress Sale and Fashion Show last March.

Denver Goodwill, CU-Boulder Collect 21 Tons of Donations during Campus Move Out

To keep unwanted college items out of landfills and put them in the hands of people who can use them, Goodwill Industries of Denver partners with local colleges and universities to set up Goodwill donation stations during move-out time. This spring, the agency partnered for the first time with the University of Colorado-Boulder Environmental Center, establishing 23 donation stations in the lobbies of the university’s residence halls, as well as near dumpsters.

WA Goodwill Collects Two Months of E-Waste in a Single Day

‘American Idol’ Contestant’s Family Donates Autographed Photo to Goodwill®

Goodwill® donors in Southern Georgia are getting the chance to receive more than a tax deduction in return for their donations this week. The parents of current American Idol contestant Phillip Phillips have donated an autographed photo of their son in recognition of Goodwill Industries Week, May 6-12, to be given to one lucky donor at the week’s end.
