Take one amazing donated city space, add a cultural phenomenon, mix it with charitable organizations, throw in some spectacular secondhand goods and gently stir. BOOM! What you get is the sweet, sweet taste of Edited, Goodwill of Greater Washington’s three-day pop-up shop that earned rave reviews and temporarily drove hordes of shoppers to Chinatown in downtown DC this week.

Every time July 4 rolls around, I’m reminded of three things: American flag sunglasses, cakes decorated with berries and watching the sky burst with bright, patriotic colors as I nurse my most recent farmer’s tan. It’s also the time of year that reminds me that so much of what I’ve seen in thrift stores are products made in America as well as items that let us display our national pride.

You get them for doing a 5K. You get them at concerts. You get them for applying to credit cards and for supporting a political candidate. You get one on vacation to show off where you’ve been, as well as from the school you just got accepted to to tell everyone where you’re going. T-shirts are like getting a peek into your community’s real identity.

Last summer with the help of Goodwill Industries® and a Kickstarter campaign, I spent 52 days visiting thrift stores across the country in an RV named “HaRVey” for my personal photo project, All Thrifty States. To me, thrift stores are a great way to get to know a community and take the pulse of our nation. In the stuff, I see stories.
