Starting the Habit Early

Now that my son Jack is two months old and ready to see a bit of the world, I felt it was time to pass on my family’s thrifty habits. Can’t start ‘em too early, right? So we headed to a new Goodwill store in Columbia, MD, to check out some baby goods he might be interested in.

Déjà Vu Donations: When Well-Loved Items Hit Thrift Store Racks

Having been a thrifter and thrift store donor for so long-- and having met so many thrifters in my travels-- there's one question I often get: "Do you ever see stuff you've donated out for sale?" And the answer is pretty often, actually.

Here’s What This Year’s Second Annual Secondhand Sunday Had in Store

Earlier this month, freshly stuffed with turkey and cranberry sauce, millions of Americans mapped out their early Black Friday morning shopping strategies. Just hours after giving thanks for the things they already have, many of them huddled in tents on cold, hard, strip-mall sidewalks -- ironically -- to get more stuff. Not me. Last year’s first Secondhand Sunday had me looking forward to this year’s post-Thanksgiving trip to the thrift store even more.

Throw an All-Thrifty Baby Shower

Some college girlfriends called me a few months back and wanted to arrange a baby shower back in my hometown. I was thrilled and excited at a chance to see everyone and show off the bump, but talk of showers always leads to talk of registries. I have to admit-- the thought of registering made me a little bit queasy. Babies need so much stuff-- but does it all really need to be new? So when I flew back to Missouri last weekend, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I have to hand it to my friends and family-- they know me better than I ever imagined. I was treated to a brunch with good friends, family, food, generosity, crafts, love and THRIFTY gifts!

Thrifty Ladies Work the Runway at Goodwill® Fashion Show and Gala

Last month, I had the pleasure of attending Goodwill’s The Art of Fashion Runway Show and Gala here in DC for the first time. Just walking in, it was obvious this wasn’t going to be your typical fashion show. Past a gaggle of valet parking staff and the tables brimming with hors d’oeuvres, up the stairs at Artisphere and past the Andy Warhol exhibit, there they were -- racks and racks of curated thrift store goodies!

Thrifting from Here to Maternity

There’s a little news to share with all of you this month-- there’s a new little thrifter on the way! I have a whole new section of the thrift store to delve into! If there’s one thing you learn from others really quickly when you find out you’re expecting, it’s that you’re going to need a whole lot of stuff for the little one. So my first trip to the thrift store after getting the news, I made a point to start looking early. Off to Goodwill® I went, having done some online research first into some items that might eventually need purchasing for me and the little one.

Thrift Stores: Where Nothing Is Ever Discontinued

When I registered for dishes all those years ago, I wanted dishes I’d actually use and not just look at. The ones I decided on were simple, adorable and apparently (unbeknownst to me) about to be discontinued. That’s why I nearly had a fit when I spotted a pile of my discontinued wedding dishes NEW WITH THE TAGS for sale on an endcap at the Goodwill.

Skip the Tie: Celebrate Father’s Day with Unique Goodwill® Finds

It’s nearly Father’s Day and you know what that means--time to buy dad a new tie! Or is it? Trust me, your local Goodwill® store is sure to have a huge selection of ties to pick from. I’ve never stepped foot in a thrift store that didn’t. Some ties are printed with themes that are so hilarious they should really be framed. But don’t be fooled into thinking that’s all you can find for dad there. It’s also full of great gifts for dad that he’ll actually use!
